Known Issues with ELM 8.0

ELM Console Crashes on Some Operating Systems

When launching the ELM Console on certain operating systems (Windows 10, Windows Server 2019, Windows Servers 2022) the application will crash with no error message or log file to review.

Details:

  • The dll that won’t load is a DevExpress dll, a third party vendor that Fire Mountain Software uses for display controls.
  • The problem is caused by a registry key: DWORD entry with a value of 0 named AllowStrongNameBypass under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework key.
  • If the value of the above registry key is 1, the default value , the problem goes away.

Current Status (as of 11/7/2024)

Microsoft has been reviewing and researching the problem and elevated the issue within development, however a timeframe for a hot fix is currently unknown.

Workaround

Install and run the ELM Console on a Windows 11 operating system and remotely connect to the ELM Server.  The console and server do not have to be on the same machine.  In fact, you can have a single ELM Console connect to multiple ELM Servers.
